What Is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that can have many forms.
Generally, acne refers to acne vulgaris, which is the medical
term for what you may call zits, pimples, or breakouts. Acne
vulgaris is associated with bacteria called
Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes.
Although people of all ages get acne, it may seem as though you have
more than your fair share of it as you begin and go through puberty. That
is because during puberty, a
hormone called testosterone, in both males and females,
increases and causes the body to produce more oil, called sebum.
Sebum, together with dead skin cells, clogs pores, which causes acne.
Acne can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and
even upper arms.
